At SMDC’S June 12th meeting, Vickey Sayage, the vice-president of the Citizens for Friendly Airport (C4FA), gave an excellent overview of the history and issues associated with the plan for the expansion of the McClellan-Palomar Airport. The plan for expansion is part of the 20 year plan of San Diego County. The C4FA, representing residents of the Carlsbad and neighboring communities, is concerned that the expansion plan in the present form will add 24 hour noise and air pollution to the neighborhoods. AND C4FA is concerned the expansion plan is the first step to turning McClellan-Palomar Airport into San Diego County’s second busiest airport, similar to John Wayne Airport in Orange County.
In litigation by C4FA and others against the County, the Court ordered a review and revision of the plan. The County Supervisors have voted in favor of following the Court order.
However, with the make-up of the County Board of Supervisors possibly changing with each new election, we must stay vigilant and alert to what happens in the future.
