The Results Are In!! MLK Jr Day of Service

First Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service A Success!!

At the time San Marcos Dems published its monthly Newsletter, results from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Cleanup Event, coordinated by Jay Petrek and Paula Rucinski, and co-sponsored by Jay Petrek and EDCO, had not been received. The cleanup event extended from January 3rd through February 4th. San Marcos Unified School District high school students who participated received two hours of community service credit upon submitting a voucher documenting their service.

Lisa Stout, Executive Director of The San Marcos Promise, reported 37 high school student vouchers were submitted for the MLK Cleanup event representing more than 74 hours of student volunteer service. Additionally, that doesn’t include volunteer hours from others in the community who did not participate in the high school voucher program.

EDCO Services agreed to contribute $1.00 per student voucher to The San Marcos Promise, up to $1,000. The great news is that EDCO has agreed to support The San Marcos Promise with their full $1,000 contribution and continue to co-sponsor the MLK Community Cleanup event with Jay Petrek and the San Marcos Democratic Club in the future.

The San Marcos Promise is thrilled by EDCO’s response and continued support.  EDCO’s partnership will give added influence in the community when seeking additional sponsors. Jay Petrek will work with Lisa Stout and the high school service clubs to better market the cleanup event amongst the high school students and extend the timeframe for community service to encourage greater participation.

Onward and upward!

Jay Petrek

Thank You to the High Schoolers and all the other participants that cleaned the City of San Marcos!
