Subject: Request for a donation for March 17th McCarthy-Bakersfield action
Dear Sisters and Brothers at the San Diego Democratic Party Central Committee,
I am writing to ask for your support of an event that the California Alliance for Retired Americans (CARA) is planning for March 17, 2023 at Speaker McCarthy’s Bakersfield office. The purpose of this rally is demand that the new Speaker, and the GOP “KEEP THEIR HANDS OF MEDICARE, MEDICAID AND SOCIAL SECURITY!”
As you know, the GOP has made cutting and privatizing these earned benefits a centerpiece of their platform, and intend to hold budget and deficit negotiations hostage if these programs are not cut. We cannot let this happen. These programs are the foundation of our retirement security and millions of seniors and people with disabilities depend upon them as their sole source of support. Those of us still working, are paying into them with the expectation that they will be there for us when we become eligible. And Social Security does not add one cent to the federal deficit – the money is held in a separate trust fund and not part of the national budget.
CARA, along with our members and partners in Speaker McCarthy’s district will “anchor” a rally and press event at McCarthy’s Bakersfield office on Friday, March 17th at 1pm. In addition to our Bakersfield team, we hope to bring hundreds of other supporters to Bakersfield to build a powerful, grassroots effort to show the Speaker and his GOP members that we mean business when it comes to these essential earned benefits.
We hope to bring hundreds by bus from other parts of the State to Bakersfield, where we will meet at a public park for a light lunch, music and a rally. From there we will march the 1 ½ blocks to Speaker McCarthy’s office, where we hope to have a delegation of his constituents meet with him/his staff while the rest of us rally outside his office. We plan to livestream the event so folks around the country can participate, and end with a call to action to all Members of Congress demanding that we Protect, Improve and Expand Medicare and Social Security, rather than cutting or privatizing.
We are writing to ask you to contribute $5000 (or whatever you can) to help us pay for one bus and some of the other expenses (food, permits, etc.) so that we can make this event as powerful and grand as it needs to be. We are planning to have a bus leaving from San Diego. For your donation, we will list you on the program and all outreach for the event. Your donation will allow for 50 Folks to attend this event, who otherwise would not be able to join us.

And of course, your members are invited to attend and join one of our buses (we will list bus locations and pick-up times once we determine how much money we are able to raise and bus locations).
